Search Intent

Search intent is the task or outcome a searcher is trying to satisfy with a query.

Search intent shapes what a page needs to be. A definition, checklist, comparison, local result, and product page solve different searcher problems.

Intent alignment affects page structure, title tags, examples, calls to action, and the depth of content required.

How to read intent

Start by looking at the query language and the pages already satisfying that query. Modifiers such as “best,” “near me,” “template,” “examples,” “cost,” “how to,” or “vs” usually signal different expectations.

The search result page can also show intent clues: maps, product results, videos, discussions, featured snippets, or comparison pages.

Page decisions intent should shape

  • Page type: guide, tool, service page, comparison, checklist, local page, or glossary entry.
  • Depth: quick answer, detailed tutorial, benchmark, or buying guide.
  • Proof: screenshots, examples, data, testimonials, reviews, or methodology.
  • Calls to action: learn more, compare options, request an audit, or use a tool.
  • Internal links: next pages should match the user’s likely next question.

Common mistakes

Do not target every related keyword with the same page format. A service page rarely satisfies a pure definition query, and a glossary entry rarely satisfies a buyer who needs vendor proof.

Intent alignment makes title tags, content structure, and conversion paths feel natural.
